A new leisure centre in Millom, Cumbria, will officially be known as Millom Leisure Centre after a community vote concluded recently. Residents participated in a six-week poll, with the straightforward name emerging as the clear favourite.
Out of 931 votes, Millom Leisure Centre secured 416. Millom Sports Village received 305 votes, and The Salthouse Centre garnered 211. The vote was open to residents of Millom and Haverigg, including all local school pupils.
Millom Town Deal, overseeing the project, stated the chosen name embodies the town's spirit and the facility's purpose. Chair of the town deal board, David Savage, highlighted the strong turnout as a sign of community engagement in shaping the facility's future.
The facility is being constructed on Salthouse Road as part of the Town Deal's Activating Community Health scheme. It will feature a swimming pool, sports hall, fitness studio, and a 3G all-weather pitch. Construction is progressing rapidly in partnership with Cumberland Council, with completion anticipated by autumn.
