Millennials Drink Most? Data Says It's Nuanced
3 Sep
Summary
- 81% of millennials report drinking alcohol, the highest rate across generations.
- Survey tracks who drinks at all, not the quantity or frequency of consumption.
- Overall alcohol consumption per occasion has decreased since 2024.

A recent 2026 IWSR survey highlights that 81% of millennials, aged 29 to 44, report drinking alcohol, surpassing Gen X (77%) and Gen Z (74%). This finding positions millennials as the generation with the highest participation rate in alcohol consumption.
However, this statistic only indicates whether individuals consume alcohol at all, not the volume or frequency. The survey, covering 15 major markets including the US and UK, found that the overall percentage of adults drinking has remained stable at 76%.
A significant trend emerging from the data is a decrease in the average number of drinks consumed per occasion, dropping from 4.4 in 2024-2025 to 3.9 in 2026. This suggests a move towards moderation and intentional consumption rather than excessive drinking.
Furthermore, the perception of Gen Z being entirely abstinent is challenged, with their participation rate increasing to 74%. This generation shows more interest in cocktails and social experiences, prioritizing occasion and quality. The evolving drinking culture emphasizes moderation, premium experiences, and social connection, with a rise in mindful and low-alcohol options.
