Klim's honesty: 'You've got the dud version of me'

Olympic swimming champion Michael Klim has opened up about his ongoing battle with chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP), a rare neurological disorder. Diagnosed six years ago, the condition has significantly impacted his identity and physical capabilities, leading to muscle loss and severe loss of sensation in his legs. Klim candidly confessed to his fiancée, Michelle Owen, that she was getting 'the dud version' of him, expressing concern about burdening her with his health challenges.

Despite his diagnosis, which he received shortly after beginning his relationship with Owen, Klim proposed to her before Christmas last year. Owen has been a pillar of support, with Klim describing her as 'deeply kind' and 'steady.' He previously revealed struggles with alcohol use to numb the pain and acknowledged the possibility of ending up in a wheelchair.

Klim urged others to seek medical attention for even minor symptoms like cold feet or toe numbness, regretting his own delayed action in addressing his condition. CIDP involves nerve inflammation and the destruction of protective coverings on nerve fibers. The couple's relationship began shortly before Klim's diagnosis, and Owen has expressed pride in his openness about his condition, hoping it raises awareness and research for a cure.
