Masculinity Meets Medspa: Men's Cosmetic Boom
11 Jul
Summary
- Men's cosmetic procedures are rising faster than women's.
- Social media and self-image pressures impact men's choices.
- Cosmetic surgery may be linked to asserting masculine status.

Cosmetic enhancement is increasingly becoming a domain for men, a departure from its traditionally female-centric past. Globally, procedures for men are increasing at a rate more than three times that for women. This surge is partly attributed to the pervasive influence of social media and digital platforms, which present highly curated and often idealized images, leading to heightened self-scrutiny.
While some perceive dating app culture as a driver for men to enhance their appearance, research suggests a stronger link between cosmetic surgery and traditional masculine ideals. A study in German-speaking Europe found that men invested in traits like competitiveness and dominance were significantly more likely to undergo cosmetic procedures.
This trend indicates that men are increasingly utilizing cosmetic surgery as a tool to assert dominance, project success, and achieve sexual desirability. Notably, none of the men surveyed reported undergoing procedures to satisfy a partner; instead, the motivation appeared to be an elevation of masculine status.
