The Maré favela complex is set to host its fourth annual competitive food trail, an event designed to challenge negative stereotypes and welcome visitors from across Rio de Janeiro. Scheduled to begin October 1, this month-long culinary event features 16 local restaurants, many of them Black-owned businesses, offering a diverse range of dishes.
The food trail, named Comida de Favela, is more than just a gastronomic event; it's a powerful statement of community pride and resilience. Organized by the NGO Casa das Mulheres da Maré, it aims to shift perceptions often dominated by news of poverty and crime.
This initiative has gained significant recognition, becoming a finalist in the Best Culinary Festival in Latin America category at the 2026 World Culinary Awards. The event not only provides a platform for local businesses but also offers them management and marketing training, including guidance on handling sexual harassment reports.
Featured dishes often draw inspiration from the north-eastern heritage of many residents, such as pizzas with traditional toppings and unique pork leg burgers. The event also fosters internal economic circulation within Maré's various favelas, connecting communities like Parque União and Nova Holanda.
Organizers acknowledge that visitors might witness the realities of favela life, including the presence of armed drug traffickers, but emphasize that violence does not define Maré entirely. The food trail seeks to build understanding and foster a new perspective on public security in Rio. The community's growing culinary scene, comprising approximately 1,200 restaurants and bars out of 3,200 businesses, is a testament to its vibrant spirit and entrepreneurial drive.
