Lucknow's parking woes: Neglected lots fuel traffic jams
27 Nov
Summary
- Thousands of vehicles illegally parked daily in commercial areas.
- Multi-level parking facilities are neglected, unsafe, and non-functional.
- Towing alone won't solve the crisis without infrastructure upgrades.

Traffic congestion continues to plague Lucknow's Hazratganj and Lalbagh areas, even with municipal towing operations underway. The core issue lies in a severe shortage of usable parking spaces and the dilapidated state of existing facilities. Traders estimate that only 2,000 vehicles can be accommodated in designated lots, while 10,000 to 12,000 are parked illegally on roads during peak hours.
Inspections revealed multi-level parking lots in disrepair, with stained floors, locked and rusted washrooms, and non-operational elevators. Poor lighting further exacerbates safety concerns, particularly at night. Despite ongoing complaints, the Lucknow Municipal Corporation has been slow to address these issues, leading to frustration among commuters and traders.
Local authorities have acknowledged the problem and plan to survey and improve existing parking lots, alongside developing new ones. However, residents and traders stress that towing is only a temporary fix. Sustainable solutions require comprehensive upgrades to existing facilities, ensuring they are clean, safe, and fully functional to accommodate the actual parking demand.
