Hawkins was inspired by a similar cat election in Massachusetts and sought to counteract current societal divisions.
The initiative seeks to promote "silliness and togetherness" within the community. The previous cat mayoral election, which featured 13 candidates, achieved a remarkable 77.3% turnout, surpassing both the general election and the Brexit referendum figures.
Hawkins is currently inviting residents to submit profiles for their cats. She also welcomes ideas for humorous, cat-related articles to be included in the directory, emphasizing a preference for the more "dafter" submissions. The project reflects a desire to create lightheartedness and strengthen neighborhood bonds.
