Love Island Star Believes Earth is Flat

Love Island contestant Belle Hassan has publicly expressed support for the Flat Earth conspiracy theory. During an unseen segment shared on TikTok, Hassan engaged fellow islander Ciaran Davies in a discussion about the Earth's shape, questioning how gravity would function if the planet were round. Davies struggled to explain the scientific principles of gravity to Hassan, who remained firm in her belief.

Physicists have offered explanations regarding the nature of gravity. Dr. Jan Šlégr, an associate professor of physics, clarified that gravity consistently pulls towards the Earth's center, regardless of one's location on the surface. Michael Marshall, project director of the Good Thinking Society, added that many Flat Earth proponents misunderstand the scientific model, failing to grasp that gravity pulls towards the center of mass, not simply 'down'.

Experts suggest that to address Flat Earth beliefs, it is more productive to encourage individuals to articulate their reasoning. This approach allows them to identify potential flaws in their own logic. Simple evidence such as ships disappearing hull-first over the horizon and the curved shadow of the Earth during lunar eclipses can also be used to demonstrate the Earth's spherical nature. Misconceptions often stem from confusion about fundamental physical concepts, necessitating patient explanations.
