A runner from London has made history by completing his 1,000th parkrun, a first worldwide. Darren Wood, 43, from Carshalton, south London, achieved this significant milestone on Saturday at Morden parkrun. He was celebrated with a guard of honor by his fellow Sutton Runners and received a special 1,000 parkrun T-shirt, cape, and crown, being dubbed 'the king of parkrun.'
Wood first participated in parkrun in October 2004. He revealed that the free community events were crucial for his mental well-being during a difficult period, stating they 'saved [his] life.' He explained that parkrun provided a non-judgmental environment where he could connect with others and express his feelings.
Currently, Wood is 36 parkruns ahead of his nearest competitor. While finding the attention slightly overwhelming, he views the milestone as a "nice celebration." He emphasized the inclusive nature of parkrun, stating, "Everyone is welcome and it will change and save lives if we can get more and more people involved."
