Lithuanian Envoy Embraces Diwali Traditions in Delhi

As of October 18th, 2025, Lithuanian Ambassador Diana Mickeviciene is preparing to celebrate her 8th Diwali in the Indian capital of Delhi. Draped in a deep blue and golden sari, Mickeviciene exudes festive charm as she speaks about her love for the festival of lights.

The ambassador's association with Diwali dates back to 1994, when she first experienced the vibrant celebrations during a diplomatic training course in Delhi. Mickeviciene recalls the fireworks, lit-up streets, and the warmth of the people who invited her to a Diwali party. She has continued to celebrate the festival even when not in India, keeping electric garlands around her home until the New Year.

For Mickeviciene, the highlight of Diwali is the puja, the "real essence of Deepavali." She draws parallels between the goddess Lakshmi and the Lithuanian goddess Laima, both of whom are believed to bring good luck and blessings for the year ahead. The ambassador resonates deeply with the spiritual meaning of Diwali, seeing it as a time for personal renewal.

This year, the Lithuanian Embassy in Delhi will be decked out in lights for the occasion. The all-women crew of the embassy recently donned saris and visited Rajon ki Baoli in Mehrauli for a Diwali photoshoot, embracing the festive spirit.
