Interior designer Linda Barker, famed for her role on Changing Rooms, has shared insights into her financial life, including a substantial £30,000 loss on property investments. Around 15 years ago, Barker invested in two new property developments in Cyprus and Portugal, expecting good returns. However, the management companies for both developments collapsed after about three years, resulting in the complete loss of her investment.
Barker has a history of successful property ventures, often buying dilapidated properties, renovating them, and selling for a profit. Her financial journey began with a strong work ethic learned from her parents, who ran a butchery business. She recalled saving her first earnings from a Saturday job at 16 to buy a £25 dress.
Her financial successes include a five-figure sum from appearing on 'I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here' in 2003 and lucrative work with DFS in the Noughties, though exact figures remain confidential. She also purchased a Mercedes SLK convertible for £20,000 in 2010.
More recently, Barker and her husband purchased a six-bedroom Georgian mansion in Yorkshire for £750,000 during lockdown, a stark contrast to London prices. She plans to create a natural swimming pond on the grounds. Barker aims to pass down uncomplicated assets to her family and contributes to a private pension, hoping to remain financially comfortable in retirement.
