15 May
Summary
- French toy spaniel Lazare died at 30 years old.
- He was adopted by a new owner weeks before his death.
- His age was verified in two registries before his passing.

A French toy spaniel named Lazare, believed by some to be the world's oldest dog, passed away on May 14, 2026, at the remarkable age of 30. Lazare, born on December 4, 1995, spent most of his life with his original owner until her passing. He was then transferred to an animal charity shelter.
Ophelie Boudol, a 29-year-old single mother, adopted Lazare last month after falling in love with him at the shelter. She had initially intended to find a pet for her mother but decided to bring Lazare home with her. Sadly, he died just weeks later, with Boudol noting he passed away in her arms to join his beloved mistress.
At 30 years and five months old, Lazare was described as being frail, requiring nappies, and having lost his sight and hearing. Despite his age-related challenges, Boudol affectionately described him as having a "delightfully spirited" and "endearing personality." Animal charity workers had begun the process of registering Lazare for a possible world record, verifying his birth date in two registries.
Previously, a dog named Bobi, a Rafeiro do Alentejo from Portugal, was thought to hold the record at 31 years old before his reported death in 2023. However, a review in 2024 by Guinness World Records could not find sufficient conclusive evidence to verify his age.
