Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis sought to create a home that felt authentically lived-in and grounded, rather than an ostentatious Hollywood estate. Their Los Angeles property, dubbed KuKu Farms, was developed over five years on six acres, designed to resemble an old barn converted into a house, embodying a sense of timelessness.
The couple collaborated with architect Howard Backen and designer Vicky Charles, focusing on family life. Their vision materialized as a main residence connected to an entertainment barn and barbecue pavilion, all constructed with reclaimed timber and board-formed concrete. The design emphasizes a rustic yet refined aesthetic, with features like reclaimed oak floors and exposed beams.
Sustainability was a key element, with the property featuring a well for irrigation and solar panels providing surplus energy. Reclaimed wood is used throughout, and structures are positioned to maximize views. Even a ten-foot crystal chandelier from their previous home found a new, playfully juxtaposed place in the entertainment barn.
The interior design, guided by Vicky Charles, offers a collected feel rather than a decorated one, blending contemporary elements with vintage pieces like silver throne chairs in the primary bathroom. This approach creates an environment of quiet order, reflecting Kutcher's need for calming surroundings, allowing the family to feel at home and authentically themselves on their expansive property.
