Mom's Tattoo Gives Nonverbal Son His Voice Back

In Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada, Jessica Fletcher found an innovative way to ensure her nonverbal son, Hunter, can always communicate. Following an incident where Hunter's Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) device failed at a restaurant, Fletcher tattooed a computer keyboard image onto her arm. This allowed Hunter, who has nonspeaking autism, to finger-type his needs, preventing distress and isolation.

The resourceful mother shared a video of Hunter using the tattoo, which quickly gained widespread attention online, exceeding 100 million views. This viral moment has inspired others, with many parents opting for similar tattoos. Fletcher's initiative has also led to a collaboration with a clothing company, Maritimer Clothing Company, to produce apparel featuring the keyboard design.

These garments aim to provide an alternative communication method for children with nonspeaking autism when their primary devices are unavailable or malfunctioning. Fletcher emphasizes that "non-speakers have very complex thoughts and ideas and deep feelings," urging society to "presume competence" and explore diverse communication avenues beyond traditional devices or sign language. The tattoo proved critical when Hunter's AAC device required an eight-day replacement, during which the tattoo served as his sole means of expression.
