Kate Winslet battles coast erosion at £5M home

Summary
- Actress seeks stronger timber gates for historic seaside home.
- Home is in highest flood-risk zone amidst coastal erosion.
- Winslet has previously sought sea defence measures.
Actress Kate Winslet has applied for permission to replace aging wooden gates at her Grade II-listed seaside property in West Wittering, Sussex. The property, purchased in 2013 and now reportedly worth around £5 million, is situated in Flood Zone 3, the highest category for flood risk.
The existing gates have suffered deterioration due to prolonged exposure to salty sea air. The proposed replacement involves specially treated timber gates, designed to be more resistant to decay and the harsh coastal environment. The harbour-side entrance would also be widened slightly, requiring the relocation and replanting of a section of hedge.
This initiative comes as the area faces growing concerns over coastal erosion and rising sea levels. Neighboring towns like Selsey are investing millions in coastal defense schemes to protect thousands of properties. Council officials have previously warned of the diminishing lifespan of existing sea defenses.
This is not the first time Winslet has undertaken protective measures for her home. She previously withdrew an application for a sea barrier in 2015 but received permission two years later for new timber sea defenses. The Environment Agency has not raised objections to the current gate proposal.
Recent renovations at the eight-bedroom residence also include interior changes like converting a basement pool to a gym and restoring bedroom layouts. Winslet also secured retrospective permission for an outbuilding to be used as a gym and annexe, alongside approvals for redecorating exterior features.
