Kailash Pilgrimage Booms Post-China Restrictions

Following China's relaxation of travel restrictions, there has been a significant increase in Hindu pilgrims undertaking the Kailash-Mansarovar Yatra. Devotees from around the world are now embarking on this spiritual journey, often as part of organised groups. Devendra Sharma, a priest from Sydney, has led multiple successful yatras, bringing groups from Australia.

These pilgrimages are predominantly facilitated by private tour operators, who manage travel for the vast majority of pilgrims. The Nepal route is commonly utilized by these private tours, contrasting with the government-organized yatras that use routes through Uttarakhand or Sikkim.

While private operators generally receive positive feedback, concerns exist regarding shorter tour durations, which can limit crucial acclimatisation time for the high altitudes. The 52-km Kailash parikrama, a physically demanding circuit, presents a major challenge. Pilgrims, like Pankaj Chadha who completed the yatra in 2019, describe it as an arduous trek, with steep ascents and descents requiring rigorous training and endurance against extreme weather conditions.
