A beloved calico cat named Nitama, who held the esteemed position of train stationmaster, has died at the age of 15. Her passing was marked by a funeral service on Saturday, December 13th, at Kishi Station in Japan's Wakayama Prefecture, attended by approximately 500 people.
Nitama had been ill since late October 2025, with her death occurring on November 20th. The Wakayama Electric Railway Co. enshrined Nitama, bestowing upon her the title of 'Honorary Special Stationmaster' as a tribute to her service and the comfort she provided.
Nitama began her role in 2015, succeeding the renowned feline stationmaster Tama. Tama's earlier tenure was instrumental in reviving the financially struggling rail line, reportedly generating substantial revenue and increasing ridership. Nitama was chosen as her successor due to her outgoing nature and prior training from Tama.
