Italy's Beach Battle: Sand, Sun, and Sarnies!
11 Jul
Summary
- Beachgoers are clashing with private clubs over packed lunches.
- Resort owners cite hygiene and waste concerns regarding outside food.
- Customers argue high rental costs justify bringing their own meals.

The tranquility of Italian beach clubs has been disrupted by a growing conflict over customers bringing packed lunches. A recent incident in Vieste, Puglia, where a woman was confronted for consuming homemade sandwiches, has echoed similar sentiments along the Lazio coast. Beatrice Bordo, a patron of Il Tirreno, expressed frustration, stating her €850 seasonal rental should permit her to eat her own food, rather than incurring up to €50 daily for resort dining.
Beach concession holders argue that allowing outside food, often full meals rather than simple sandwiches, creates problems with hygiene, waste, and overall resort management. Nicola Ragno of Assoturismo noted that such practices 'damage the image' of beach clubs. While some private establishments have their own policies, no national law prohibits customers from bringing food.
Regional president Antonio Decaro emphasized that the sea is a common good and shouldn't be a luxury, highlighting the rising costs of beach rentals. Consumers' association Altroconsumo reported a 6% increase in rental costs for loungers and umbrellas compared to 2025. This cost-of-living pressure is pushing more people to opt for packed lunches, making beach holidays less accessible.
