Nestled in Meghalaya's East Khasi Hills, Kongthong village offers a unique glimpse into a culture where music often replaces spoken words. This tradition, known as 'Jingrwai Iawbei' or 'Mother's Love Song,' assigns a distinct personal melody to each villager at birth, given by their mother. These melodic names are deeply tied to family and ancestry, representing an oral tradition passed down through generations.
In 2021, Kongthong's distinctive cultural practices garnered national and international attention when India's Ministry of Tourism recommended it for the UN World Tourism Organization's Best Tourism Villages initiative. While not selected for the award that year, the recognition underscored the village's unique heritage.
Beyond its musical novelty, Kongthong is set amidst Meghalaya's scenic green landscapes, offering a tranquil escape with forested slopes and mist-laden paths. Visitors can explore local orange orchards and support the community by purchasing locally produced honey.
The journey to Kongthong, about 55-60 km from Shillong, provides scenic views of the East Khasi Hills. For a more immersive experience, a multi-day Whistling Village Trek is also available, winding through forests and traditional villages.
Travellers are encouraged to engage respectfully with the community, seeking permission before recording personal song-names and supporting local businesses to help preserve this unique tradition.
