Hubballi Markets Buzz: Ugadi Festivities Clash with High Flower Costs
18 Mar
Summary
- Flower prices surged significantly for Ugadi celebrations.
- Jasmine sold for Rs 700-850 per kg, sevanti for Rs 280-350.
- Despite high costs, Hubballi residents enthusiastically prepared for the new year.

As the Ugadi festival approaches, Hubballi is buzzing with preparations, albeit under the shadow of significantly increased flower prices. The city's commercial hubs, including Durgad Bail and Janatha Bazaar, were crowded with people buying new clothes, fruits, and essential items for the new year, which is being celebrated on Thursday. Ugadi Amavasya pujas were performed on Wednesday.
Despite the summer heat, the demand for festive items remained strong. However, the prices of various flowers, crucial for Ugadi rituals, have skyrocketed. Jasmine was priced between Rs 700-850 per kg, while sevanti ranged from Rs 280-350 per kg, and roses cost Rs 200-300 per kg.
Wholesale merchants attribute the price hike to a series of upcoming festivals in March and April. Local resident Chandrabai Hulakoti noted that flower prices typically increase during festive seasons but eventually stabilize. She added that even with the elevated costs, residents are determined to celebrate Ugadi, the first festival of the year, with traditional grandeur, as they do every year.
