The 2012 death of Howard Stern's English bulldog, Bianca, catalyzed a significant transformation in animal rescue. Following their loss, the Sterns initiated a national fundraising campaign, culminating in the establishment of Bianca's Furry Friends Feline Adoption Center. This 14,000-square-foot facility, located in Port Washington, New York, opened its doors, offering a more humane environment for shelter cats.
The state-of-the-art center features open, cage-free rooms, allowing cats freedom to roam, unlike traditional metal cages. Large windows provide natural light, and amenities like climbing walls and hiding spaces ensure the animals' comfort and well-being. This expansion enabled the North Shore Animal League America to double its cat rescue capacity and also create more space for rescued dogs and puppies.
Beth Stern became a dedicated volunteer, personally fostering over 2,000 cats and kittens since 2013. Her work focuses on vulnerable animals, including orphaned kittens and those with medical needs. The couple also uses public platforms, such as Howard Stern's radio show and the annual Kitten Bowl, to raise awareness and promote adoption nationwide, supporting the world's largest no-kill rescue organization.
