A formerly homeless mother, Sionne, has spoken out about how Curry on the Street, a volunteer-led cafe in Nelson, has been instrumental in turning her life around. This center has provided nearly 60,000 hot meals and vital emotional support over the years.
Sionne, who is now two years sober from drink and drugs, credits cafe manager James Foy with her recovery and for ensuring she kept custody of her one-year-old son, JJ. Foy's unwavering support gave her the confidence to overcome past struggles.
The cafe, founded in 2019, offers a welcoming, stigma-free environment where the homeless and children eat for free. Staff provide essential bags, food parcels, and outreach services, addressing addiction and mental health issues. Comic Relief is donating to the center to purchase new furniture and food.
