A remarkable collection of over 1,000 hippo-themed items, amassed over 56 years by Alnwick resident Philip Angier, is now being sold for charity. Angier, aged 75, began his collection at 19 after receiving a hippo toy that resembled his rowing team's mascot. His passion grew over decades, fueled by gifts and acquisitions from his career importing African goods.
The eclectic collection features a wide array of items, from numerous soft toys and figurines to unique artefacts and even a hippo coffee table valued at £5,000. Angier decided to sell the collection now to manage its disposition and support a cause close to his heart.
All funds generated from the sale, which will take place on May 15 and 16 at Alnwick Castle, will be donated to the Northumberland Wildlife Trust. This initiative aims to contribute to the trust's conservation work.
