Sussexes Buy Portugal Home as Montecito Faces Weather Woes

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have acquired a new property in Portugal, where they are undertaking renovations. This strategic purchase aligns with Portugal's status as one of Europe's fastest-growing housing markets, showing an 18% annual growth in Q2 2025. The couple's existing Montecito mansion, purchased for $14.65 million, has seen its value more than double to an estimated $29 million.

However, their luxurious Montecito estate, located in a celebrity enclave, is not without environmental risks. The area is prone to extreme weather, including significant mudslides and flooding, with concerns mounting about potential issues during the upcoming rainy season. Experts and locals are worried about the proximity of San Ysidro Creek to their gated community, a situation that has previously led to evacuations, affecting former residents like Ellen DeGeneres.

The businessman who developed their Montecito home, Terry Cunningham, has admitted that weather threats were not a primary consideration during construction. Despite these concerns, the property has proven to be a lucrative investment for the Sussexes. The addition of a European base in Portugal, close to the UK, has also sparked speculation about more frequent family visits to the UK and proximity to relatives like Princess Eugenie, who also resides in Portugal.
