World War Two RAF veteran Harold Hodgson marked his 107th birthday on November 7, 2026, with a heartwarming celebration at The Grange care home in Darlington.
An appeal for birthday cards brought in over 300 messages from both acquaintances and the public, overwhelming the care home staff and Hodgson himself. He was born in Darlington on November 7, 1919, and served in the RAF from the age of 22.
Hodgson, described as a sociable character with a great sense of humor, reflected on his long life, stating he had "done everything" and "lived and lived and lived." His daughters expressed their joy at the celebrations, calling it a "day to remember."
To honor his service, the Royal British Legion presented Hodgson with a certificate of appreciation. Despite his age, he remains young at heart, with his daughters crediting a daily biscuit and coffee ritual for his vitality. He humorously remarked that turning 107 felt "bloody awful" but expressed hope for a similar celebration next year.
