Hairbrushes Bring Shine to Vulnerable Women
15 Mar
Summary
- Hairdressers donate sanitized brushes to women's centers.
- The initiative offers a sense of normality to women fleeing abuse.
- Shine Together's program is expanding nationwide with support from salons.
Two hairdressers have successfully expanded their national initiative, Shine Together, which provides essential hairbrushes to vulnerable women.
Kerry Galliano and Janie Tongue collect and thoroughly sanitize donated hairbrushes. These are then distributed to women's centers and refuges, offering a touch of normalcy to those fleeing difficult circumstances.
"Just by doing your hair, it gives that sense of normality, when women might not even have minutes to pack," explained Kerry Galliano. The program has been an "eye opener" to the challenges faced by women escaping domestic violence, for whom a hairbrush is a low priority amidst immediate survival needs.
Women's centers have reported significant positive impacts. Ashlee Ellis of C2C Milton Keynes Women's Centre stated that the donated brushes "have really helped," enabling women to feel they are taking care of themselves.
Beyond brush donations, the initiative also hosted a salon session for 30 women for International Women's Day, offering them pampering and a boost in self-esteem.
Shine Together is now gaining traction across the country, with hairdressers in Newcastle, Birmingham, London, and Bournemouth participating, demonstrating a widespread commitment to supporting women in need.
