Habitat for Humanity's Owensboro-Daviess County chapter recently celebrated the significant contributions of women to its mission. This event, held in recognition of International Women's Day, brought together around 30 women from various roles within the organization, including leaders, staff, volunteers, homeowners, and applicants.
The chapter's legacy is deeply rooted in female leadership, with Virginia Braswell serving as its executive director for nearly three decades until her retirement in 2022. During her tenure, Braswell oversaw the construction of 150 houses and was instrumental in establishing a dedicated home for Habitat. Her dedication has inspired many, including current Executive Director Amanda Green, who aims to highlight the vital role women play in a traditionally male-dominated field.
The organization actively promotes women's involvement in construction through initiatives like "women's builds" and by encouraging skill development. Amanda Henderson, a volunteer, shared her motivation to learn tool usage and understand home construction, noting an increase in female participation. Sarah Barnes, a new board member, emphasized the importance of empowering future homeowners, particularly single mothers, by serving as positive role models.
Ann Haynes, a long-time volunteer, described Braswell as an "inspiration" whose energy and commitment to women's success motivated her to become involved. Haynes highlighted the welcoming environment at Habitat builds, where men on the construction crew are supportive and encouraging, teaching women how to use tools without intimidation. This inclusive atmosphere fosters skill development and participation for all.
