St Mark's Church in Grimsby is seeking approval for a substantial expansion project to meet rising demand from its worshippers. The church, originally opened in 1959, had part of its structure demolished in 2010 due to decreased attendance. However, a strategic revitalization initiative launched in 2021, spearheaded by the Diocese of Lincoln and including a new vicar and team, has led to a significant increase in congregation numbers.
The current planning application submitted to North East Lincolnshire Council proposes a two-storey extension. This development aims to increase the church's capacity from 180 to 300 individuals. Plans also detail the addition of new facilities specifically for children, a new garden area, and enhanced car parking provisions to support the growing community.
Following a positive public consultation, the plans are now awaiting a decision from the council. This proposed growth marks a significant turnaround for St Mark's, which faced potential closure in 2020 before being selected for improvement as part of the diocese's urban church revitalization strategy. The church was officially relaunched in November 2021.
