In October 2025, it has been nearly 8 years since Anesu Masube and Hannah Brown, two complete strangers, found solace in each other during a difficult holiday travel journey in 2017. At the time, Masube was desperately trying to reunite with his grieving family in Zimbabwe, 7,000 miles away, just two days before Christmas, after the sudden loss of his mother. Meanwhile, Brown was also traveling alone to France to be with her own grieving family, having lost her father unexpectedly two years prior.
The pair's flights from Washington, D.C. to Zimbabwe, via London and Johannesburg, were long and arduous. But when Masube was able to switch to the empty emergency exit row next to Brown, the two immediately connected, bonding over their shared experiences of grief and loss. Over the course of the journey, they continued to chat, celebrating the lives of their lost loved ones.
By the time the plane landed in London, Masube and Brown had formed an unexpected but deep connection. They exchanged numbers and continued to stay in touch over the next 10 days. When Masube had to return to D.C., he purposefully booked the same return flight, and the two were seated right next to each other again. This time, their fellow passengers even offered to switch seats so Masube and Brown could sit together.
In the days after landing back in D.C., Masube and Brown began officially dating, and their relationship has blossomed ever since. Now, nearly 8 years later, they are married and living together in the nation's capital, having traveled the world and experienced many more ups and downs of life side by side.
