22 Feb
Summary
- Widow of Hairy Biker Dave Myers urges openness about grief.
- Author Ann Cleeves shares reading as an escape from loss.
- Festival of Compassion offered space for discussions on death.

Lili Myers, widow of Hairy Biker Dave Myers, and crime writer Ann Cleeves have advocated for discussing grief following personal losses. Myers, who met her husband while filming in Romania, shared that despite the immense pain of losing him in February 2024, life offers a choice to live and honor his memory. She highlighted that overcoming loss is possible, even when it feels overwhelming.
Cleeves, whose husband Tim died in 2017, described her own experience of grief as coming in waves, likening it to labor pains. She found reading to be a significant escape during the difficult period of adjusting to life without him. These personal accounts were shared as part of Gateshead's Festival of Compassion, which aimed to create space for conversations about death and grief.
The festival, organized by Compassionate Gateshead, Edberts House, and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital's palliative care team, sought to ensure that no one faces death or grief alone. Project manager Julian Prior stressed the importance of connection and support for individuals navigating these challenging life experiences. The initiative provided a community platform for shared understanding and support.
