Young Adults Prioritize Security for Relationships
19 Jul
Summary
- Global survey shows young adults value financial security for partnerships.
- Marriage remains an ideal, but stability is a key decision factor.
- Economic and housing constraints are significant barriers to partnership.

A comprehensive survey by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) indicates that young adults worldwide, despite declining marriage and fertility rates, continue to aspire to relationships and family. The 'Demographic Futures Survey' 2026, encompassing over 108,000 respondents from 73 countries, found that marriage remains a common ideal. However, decisions about partnership and parenthood are increasingly contingent on financial security, stable employment, and housing.
Economic and housing constraints are identified as the primary barriers preventing young adults from forming partnerships. The survey highlights that financial security is rated as important by 81% of respondents. Personal networks, educational, and work environments, along with online platforms, are the most common ways young people meet potential partners.
In India, 83% of respondents feel optimistic about the future, yet nearly half expressed significant worries about conflict, economic insecurity, and inequality. While a two-child family is the ideal for most, respondents aged 35-39 reported lower ideal family sizes than younger age groups. Specifically, Indian women aged 18-39 ideally want 2.1 children, compared to an average of one child among those aged 35-39.
