Giant Sunflower Towers Over Local Farm
27 Jun
Summary
- A 13-foot sunflower was measured at Backwoods Crossing.
- The sunflower grew from seeds collected over several years.
- Sunflowers attract songbirds, especially Cardinals and Wrens.

At Backwoods Crossing, head farmer Zoe Allaire has cultivated a spectacular 13-foot sunflower, the tallest she has ever grown. This colossal bloom is the result of years of selecting and planting seeds from the largest sunflowers, a practice Allaire has employed during her eight years at the farm. The sunflower was planted on March 20 and achieved its full height in just under three months, a typical life cycle for these plants.
Allaire's sunflowers serve a dual purpose: they are a stunning sight and attract local songbirds. Cardinals and wrens are noted visitors, drawn to the seeds. This achievement is reminiscent of another giant sunflower grown in Tallahassee in 2021, which reached an estimated 12 feet. Guests are invited to visit Backwoods Crossing to experience the farm's produce, observe the chickens whose eggs are used in meals, and see the bunnies whose droppings fertilize the soil.
