Gardeners in Britain have received some good news this autumn. According to Gardeners' World presenter Joe Swift, they have more time than usual to get their spring bulbs in the ground.
Traditionally, it was believed that spring bulbs had to be planted during September and October. However, Swift has debunked this widespread misconception. In reality, gardeners can plant bulbs throughout the entire autumn period, right up until the end of November.
The key factor is ensuring the bulbs are in the soil before the ground freezes over. And with this year's autumn arriving unusually late and remaining mild and dry, Swift felt compelled to correct the common misunderstanding. He explained that bulbs planted now will still provide plenty of spring and early summer color before other plants take over.
Swift recommended a variety of bulbs to consider, including hyacinths, irises, camassias, narcissi, and scillas. He believes in the "more is more" philosophy, as large swaths of color make a bigger impact. The versatile bulbs can be planted in borders, lawns, and containers.
