Galle's newest lifestyle hotel, Otherland Galle, has opened, targeting Gen Z travelers with an emphasis on adventure and local experiences. The 66-key property offers a range of activities, including surf safaris at Dewata Beach and boat excursions through the mangroves of Koggala Lagoon.
The hotel, founded by Rishi Sreedharan, Samarth Gowda, and Emanuel Siddhartha, aims to immerse guests in the local culture. Experiences are designed to be authentic, with residents leading tours and activities. This approach aligns with a growing trend in tourism, where travelers increasingly prioritize memory-making experiences over material souvenirs.
Guests can enjoy Sri Lankan culinary classes or participate in a unique pub crawl. This pub crawl, a favorite of founder Rishi Sreedharan, involves a party bus tour to various local pubs, featuring a scorecard to add a playful element akin to pub golf. The hotel's ethos is to make guests feel connected to the place itself, rather than experiencing a generic version of a destination.
Beyond the hotel's immediate offerings, guests are encouraged to explore the rich biodiversity of Rumassala Kanda, which boasts numerous bird species and medicinal plants. Boat trips on Koggala Lagoon also offer opportunities to encounter diverse wildlife, including monkeys and water monitors. The hotel itself is situated on a site historically occupied by a clothing store and a popular Sri Lankan restaurant.
