Helston's Flora Day: Free outfits save tradition
7 May
Summary
- Community college provides free Flora Day outfits to children.
- Dress code for Flora Day includes all-white costumes for children.
- The initiative ensures no child misses the event due to cost.

Helston Community College in Cornwall is ensuring all young people can participate in the town's cherished Flora Day celebrations on May 8. Fears had arisen that the traditional all-white costumes for the Children's Dance might be too expensive for some households.
To combat this, the college has established a Flora Day Clothes Library. This initiative, spearheaded by teacher Clare O'Hare, provides borrowed outfits, including brand-new and pre-worn items, for students. This helps alleviate financial burdens on families and addresses concerns about children outgrowing outfits before the next year's event.
Flora Day itself is a day-long celebration marking the transition from winter to summer, featuring various dances with strict dress codes. The Children's Dance alone involves over 1,200 children dressed in white. Beyond the dances, the event includes dramatic historical performances called Hal-an-Tow.
