Simon Johns, chairman of FC Vilomah, has been honored at the BBC Essex Make a Difference Awards. He established the football club in 2019, creating a unique support network for dads who have endured the profound loss of a baby. The team plays its home games in Writtle, near Chelmsford.
FC Vilomah offers a crucial safe space where fathers can connect, share common experiences, and find support during difficult times. Michael Fragnito, a player and volunteer, accepted the Active Award on Johns' behalf, highlighting the club's role in fostering community and providing an outlet for emotions.
The ceremony, held at Chelmsford Theatre, celebrated a total of seven other community heroes. Among them were Jayden from Buckhurst Hill, who received the Young Hero award for his volunteering at a care home, and John and Helen Wright from Great Dunmow, recognized with the Great Neighbour award for their extensive support network during the pandemic.
Additional award recipients included Tilly's Angels for reuniting lost pets, the Forget Me Not Dementia Cafe for supporting those with dementia, Lindsey Raven Emrich for environmental initiatives, the Three Flying Fish for fundraising, and Carole Darby for her volunteer work at a care centre.
