Fond du Lac is preparing for its 18th annual Juneteenth Celebration, hosted by Ebony Vision on June 20 at Buttermilk Creek Park. This year's event is anticipated to be the largest, offering a rich tapestry of culture, connection, and community to honor the holiday.
The celebration will feature a diverse lineup of entertainment, including the Milwaukee band KOJO, known for its Caribbean music styles, performing from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Following them, Soulful Liners of MKE will lead line dancing from 1 to 3 p.m. The day will culminate with a live painting performance by Patcasso, inspired by the event and set to music, from 3 to 4 p.m.
Adding to the festivities, several food trucks will be present, offering global street food and New York-style chopped sandwiches. The park's concession stand will also feature Taste of Africa. Beyond food and music, attendees can explore vendor stalls, participate in raffles, visit an educational tent, and engage with local organizations. Children will have access to face painting and other activities.
Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the US on June 19, 1865, when Union troops announced freedom for enslaved Black people in Texas. Wisconsin officially recognized Juneteenth in 2009, and it became a national holiday in 2021. Ebony Vision, a nonprofit organization, hosts this free community festival annually.
