As of October 15th, 2025, Brits are being cautioned about the serious consequences of flushing prohibited items down their drains and toilets. According to the Water Industry Act (1991), individuals convicted of this offense could face up to 2 years in prison.
The law states that people should not dump anything into a sewer or drain that is "likely to injure [or] interfere with the free flow." While such convictions are rare, blockages traced back to a person's home may result in an "unlimited fine" as punishment. Even first-time offenders could be hit with costly fines to deter future infractions.
Prohibited items include fats, oils, greases, wet wipes, sanitary products, and other waste that can clog and damage the UK's drain pipe system. Plumbers reportedly receive around 8 calls per month to fix these avoidable issues, with the average repair cost ranging from £85 to £275, not including the callout fee.
Experts advise Brits to only flush toilet paper and human waste down the drain, as the pipes are designed to handle these items. Using excessive toilet paper or flushing other materials can lead to slow draining or even burst pipes, resulting in an expensive and time-consuming repair process.
