Dog owners are abandoning flat-faced breeds to the RSPCA at unprecedented rates due to significant health complications and soaring veterinary expenses. Data from the animal charity reveals a staggering 3,800 percent increase in French bulldogs entering their care over the past decade.
These brachycephalic breeds, intentionally bred for cute, flat faces, often suffer from debilitating conditions including breathing difficulties, eye problems, and spinal issues. These can result in lifelong pain, repeated vet visits costing thousands of pounds, and a reduced quality of life.
The RSPCA highlights that the financial burden of treatment is a major factor in owners surrendering their pets, with over half of pet owners expressing concern about affording vet bills. This practice is not limited to dogs, affecting cats and rabbits as well.
A new health assessment tool, the Innate Health Assessment (IHA), has been introduced to identify unhealthy traits such as extreme conformations. Supporters hope to lobby the government to mandate this assessment, aiming to prohibit the breeding of unhealthy dogs by licensed breeders within the next ten years.
