Flat-Faced Dog Popularity Plummets
2 Jun
Summary
- French bulldog, pug, and bulldog registrations have significantly declined.
- Health issues linked to extreme flat faces are a major concern.
- Public awareness campaigns are credited with the trend reversal.

Data from the UK's Royal Kennel Club indicates a significant decrease in the registration of flat-faced dog breeds. In the first three months of 2026, French bulldog registrations dropped by 37% compared to the previous year, with bulldog and pug registrations also falling substantially. This trend follows a decade-long surge in the popularity of breeds like pugs and French bulldogs, which peaked in 2021.
Veterinary professionals and welfare organizations have extensively campaigned to raise awareness about the serious health issues inherent in brachycephalic breeds. These problems include chronic breathing difficulties, skin disorders, eye ulcers, and complications during birth. Experts suggest the declining registration figures demonstrate a public response to this information.
Prof Dan O'Neill noted that the British public's preference is shifting towards breeds with better health profiles, such as poodle-cross designer dogs. He stated that public awareness campaigns have successfully informed consumers about the shortened lifespans and significant health burdens these flat-faced dogs often endure.
The British Veterinary Association welcomed the figures, attributing the decline to successful campaigns like #BreedToBreathe. While acknowledging progress, they emphasize that work remains to address irresponsible breeding and imports of such dogs, urging prospective owners to prioritize health over appearance.
