Fashion trends have been scientifically proven to follow a 20-year cycle, according to mathematicians from Northwestern University. Their extensive study, which analyzed approximately 37,000 images of women's clothing dating back to 1869, identified a distinct pattern of styles rising and falling in popularity roughly every two decades. This cyclical nature explains the current resurgence of early 2000s fashion staples such as low-rise jeans, baby tees, and bandage dresses.
The researchers observed this phenomenon by measuring key garment features like hemlines and necklines. While styles like denim jackets and high-waisted jeans reappeared in both 1985 and 2005, and band T-shirts and choker necklaces in 1990 and 2010, the pattern has become less distinct in recent years. The study noted an increase in the variance of skirt lengths appearing concurrently, indicating a trend towards greater fragmentation and less conformity in contemporary fashion.
