22 Aug
Summary
- Radical fragrance brand Escentric Molecules celebrates 20 years of innovation.
- The company is launching its first store in Berlin next month.
- Their signature scent, Molecule 01, changes based on body chemistry.

Twenty years ago, London-based Escentric Molecules revolutionized the fragrance industry with its avant-garde "anti-fragrance" approach, centered on the synthetic Iso E Super molecule. Launched in 2006, Escentric 01 and Molecule 01 quickly became cult hits, with fans drawn to their unique ability to smell different on each individual due to body chemistry.
The brand, which began exclusively at Harvey Nichols in London, has evolved into a global phenomenon. Next month, Escentric Molecules will open its first physical store in Berlin's Mitte district. This new space is designed to reflect the brand's genderless and futuristic ethos, featuring minimalist architecture, digital displays showcasing molecular activity, and anodised aluminium elements.
Co-founder Paul White describes the shop's design, drawing inspiration from gallery and museum architecture. At night, the store will transform into a dynamic installation space, with a large video screen projecting evolving imagery. This innovative approach mirrors the brand's ongoing commitment to experimental fragrance development, as seen in its latest release, Molecule 01 + Clary Sage.
Geza Schoen, co-founder and olfactory anarchist, emphasizes the brand's enduring radicalism, stating, "We remain radical in the way we approach fragrance and product development, and we always will." The brand's consistent anti-trend stance and authentic approach have fostered a loyal customer base for two decades, with the unique experience of fragrances that stop people in their tracks remaining a core part of its identity.
