Coastal Town Eyes Outdoor Gym Over Skatepark

Plans for a new outdoor gym by the coast in East Sussex are currently under public consultation. The proposed calisthenics facility in East Saltdean aims to feature bars and climbing equipment suitable for all age groups, promoting health and wellbeing.

Lewes District Council initiated this consultation after dropping plans for a skatepark at the same site, following a public survey where over half of respondents opposed the scheme. Concerns raised included safety, maintenance, and the proximity of an existing skatepark.

Councillor Laurence O'Connor highlighted the gym as a potentially "accessible and free-to-use facility." The council is also considering a biodiversity planter at the cliff base, intended to safeguard against chalk falls and benefit local wildlife.

The undercliff location is situated below a significant Site of Special Scientific Interest, recognized for its geological importance and diverse flora and fauna. The consultation period for these proposals is scheduled to conclude on September 14. The council seeks to ensure any investment enhances the unique coastal space based on local preferences.
