The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has unveiled its list of prohibited number plates for March 2026, ahead of schedule. This comprehensive list features over 400 letter and number combinations that are deemed inappropriate for use on public roads. The agency conducts a rigorous review process twice annually to filter out plates that could cause offence or display sensitive topics.
Among the banned registrations are those considered rude, such as 'FK26 OOK' and 'AS26 HLE', as well as plates with darker themes like 'GA26 GUN' and 'GA26 WAR'. Politically charged or racially insensitive combinations are also excluded. The DVLA's spokesperson stated that the vast majority of registration numbers are released, with only those deemed offensive, embarrassing, or in poor taste being withheld.
Drivers who deliberately choose or attempt to flout these regulations by using banned or non-compliant plates risk significant penalties. This can include a £100 fine and the confiscation of the registration plate. Furthermore, improperly displayed or misrepresented plates can lead to an MOT failure and fines of up to £1,000, with the possibility of the registration number being permanently withdrawn.
