The Dudhiya Maldah mango, originating from Patna, Bihar, is a rare and historically significant fruit facing extinction. Believed to have been introduced to Patna decades ago from Islamabad, Pakistan, this unique variety is characterized by its thin seeds, very juicy pulp, and thin peel.
This special mango was reportedly irrigated with milk, which led to its name, Dudhiya, meaning milky. Despite its unique qualities, the number of Dudhiya Maldah trees has dwindled significantly. Current reports indicate that only around 1,000 trees remain in Patna, with a small number also present in Bihar Vidyapeeth.
Historically, the Dudhiya Maldah has garnered international recognition. It achieved first place at the Singapore Mango Exhibition in 1997 and was exported to approximately 33 countries in the last season. Efforts by farmers like Mohd. Irfan were crucial in its promotion, but after his passing, its cultivation and recognition have slowed, with his former garden now a college campus.
