Dubrovnik, a city long burdened by overtourism, is introducing the Camino Dubrovnik-Međugorje, a new pilgrim trail designed to steer visitors away from its congested Old Town. This seven-stage, 145km route begins in Dubrovnik, Croatia, and extends to Međugorje, Bosnia and Herzegovina, traversing historic paths used by traders and pilgrims for centuries.
The initiative, part of Dubrovnik's "Respect the City" strategy, aims to promote sustainable tourism and showcase lesser-known aspects of the region. Approximately 61km of the hike falls within Croatia's Dubrovnik-Neretva County, passing through diverse landscapes and villages.
Explorers on the Camino can discover historical infrastructure, including a 15th-century aqueduct, and ascend Mount Srđ via the Way of the Cross, offering panoramic views and insights into the city's past. The trail also passes Fort Imperial, which houses the Homeland War Museum, detailing Dubrovnik's complex history, including its defense during the Croatian War of Independence (1991-1995).
Local guides and residents have embraced the Camino, seeing it as a way to reconnect with ancestral routes and appreciate the breathtaking scenery, especially at sunset. The trail offers a tranquil alternative to the bustling Old Town, fostering a deeper connection with nature and history.
