Downey's 9-Year Dome Home: A Malibu Marvel

In 2013, Robert Downey Jr. began an unconventional building endeavor in Malibu, aiming to construct a private clubhouse using an experimental concrete technique developed by architect Nicolò Bini. The Binishell system, which uses an inflatable form to raise a thin concrete shell, was the inspiration for the unique structure.

The dome was inflated in 2015, but the project encountered significant challenges, delaying its completion for years. Construction teams reportedly expressed doubts about its stability, and progress slowed dramatically as the Downeys deliberated on interior finishing.

Ultimately, the couple committed to the project, which became more significant as their focus on environmental solutions grew, aligning with Downey's FootPrint Coalition. They integrated sustainable technologies like solar and wind power.

By 2022, the 6,500-square-foot Malibu retreat was finally finished, transforming the unfinished shell into a functional clubhouse. The interior features a large foyer, kitchen, dining area, living room, guest bedrooms, and a screening room, with unique plaster-finished dividers and soundproof glass used to define spaces within the curved geometry.

This nine-year undertaking, from its initial concept with Nicolò Bini to its completion, stands as a testament to the Downeys' persistence. What started as an experimental guest space survived numerous setbacks, culminating in a distinctive architectural achievement.
