A 78-year-old DoorDash driver from Tennessee, Richard Pulley, has received a life-changing sum of nearly $1 million in donations after a video of him struggling with a delivery went viral. The GoFundMe, started by a customer named Brittany Smith, raised $965,868 from over 32,000 donors.
Pulley had been forced out of retirement when his wife, Brenda, lost her job, making it difficult to cover essential expenses like her medication. Despite the massive influx of funds, Pulley revealed that he intends to return to work within a few days. He expressed gratitude for the donations, stating they will allow for a more comfortable life but emphasized his desire to remain useful and maintain the daily exercise the job provides.
The touching story began when Smith, a nurse, saw Pulley's slow and difficult ascent up her stairs on her doorbell camera. Moved by his struggle, she set up the fundraiser, which quickly gained national attention. Pulley and his wife of 56 years expressed disbelief and deep gratitude for the overwhelming generosity of strangers.
Brenda Pulley noted that finding employment in their mid-70s was challenging. The donations will help ease financial stress and cover medical costs. Smith stated she would initiate the fundraiser again without hesitation, expressing affection for Pulley.
