Dog Eats AirTag: Owner's Panic Sparks Safety Warning
18 Jul
Summary
- Indigestible pet toys are the leading cause of life-threatening obstructions.
- AirTags, though dangerous if swallowed, are not the primary concern.
- Gastrointestinal obstruction symptoms include vomiting, lethargy, and refusal of food.

A recent incident where a dog swallowed an AirTag has brought pet safety to the forefront. While electronic devices like AirTags necessitate immediate veterinary attention if ingested, experts from the Center for Pet Safety point to pet toys made of indigestible materials as the primary cause of dangerous gastrointestinal obstructions.
Manufacturers are embedding these dangerous materials with flavors and scents to increase pet engagement. This practice is considered exceptionally hazardous and should cease. Dogs, naturally curious and exploring with their mouths, can ingest objects rapidly, especially puppies still learning what is safe.
Recognizing signs of a potential obstruction is crucial for pet owners. Symptoms may include refusing food, vomiting, lethargy, lack of bowel movements, or a rigid abdomen. Immediate veterinary care is essential if any of these signs appear or if an indigestible object is suspected.
In one case, a dog swallowed an AirTag without showing any symptoms. After failed attempts at inducing vomiting and endoscopy, the owner faced the prospect of expensive emergency surgery, costing around $8,000. The Center for Pet Safety advises owners to build emergency funds of $8,000 to $12,000 for unexpected vet bills.
Beyond swallowed objects, owners must also be aware of household hazards like xylitol, a toxic artificial sweetener found in some sugar-free products. Regularly inspecting pet toys for wear and tear and discarding damaged ones is also recommended to prevent emergencies.
