Milo Bear, a golden retriever, disappeared on Christmas Day near a Lake Tahoe ski trail. He was missing for 72 days in the snowy wilderness. His family launched an extensive search, engaging the community and braving deep snowdrifts up to 20 feet high.
After weeks turned into months, a breakthrough occurred when a shelter scanned Milo's registered microchip. This led to his emotional reunion with his family. Though thinner, Milo was remarkably unharmed and received veterinary care before returning home.
Milo's incredible survival story has been recognized with Nationwide's 2026 Hambone Award, an honor for unusual pet insurance claims. The award highlights the importance of microchips for pet identification and the resilience of pets and their families during challenging times.
